Why My Wife Is A Better Youth Pastor Than Me
People typically have set ideas on what makes a pastor a pastor. A pastor should look a certain way, have the right title, sound a certain way, have the correct education. My wife does not have the title of “youth pastor.” She’s an early childhood teacher, greatly-talented photographer, and world-traveler but she also is one of the best pastors I know.
I have been involved in...

Momentary Setback
I don’t know if you have ever played Monopoly but one of the most frustrating parts is when you pick up the dreaded “Go To Jail” cards. After all of your progress, you have to wait several turns trying to get out while everybody else is continuing to make progress along the board. This past week I have gone through a similar setback. While playing basketball for the first time in...

new worship songs
these are some of the new songs I’m hoping to introduce to the students this fall:
“Always”- Kristian Stanfill [a very simple, catchy, but powerful song]
“Towards You”- Hillsong Youth [not released yet, loving how “synth-driven” it is]
“Rooftops”- Jesus Culture [driving song, interested to see how it goes]
“Unending Love”-...

“The nuns taught us there were two ways through life—the way of nature and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you’ll follow. Grace doesn’t try to please itself. Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked. Accepts insults and injuries. Nature only wants to please itself. Get others…

random thoughts
i was just thinking about this time when I didn’t have internet and didn’t know what “internet” was. those were crazy times, doing things outdoors and all; reading books made of paper; not knowing everything in the world and not caring.

my dad, resurrection, & the shawshank redemption
[My cousin and best man, Ryan Weaver, asked me to write a blog for his website for the upcoming season of Lent about how the concept of “Resurrection” has affected me in the past year. Here’s what I came up with.]
My dad was seriously the best dad possible. During springtime, when I was in junior high, I would get done with school and he would ask, “Do you want to go fishing,...

brief and cogent [part I]
BRIEF- using few words; concise; succinct
COGENT- to the point; relevant; pertinent.
I have forgotten most of what I learned in college but one phrase is superglued to my brain. “Brief and cogent.” My favorite professor, Dr. Buchanan (Dr.B), would repeat this phrase again and again. Four years removed from college, it has proven itself remarkably true.
She said that the truly...

It took me three weeks to decide how to spend my christmas Itunes gift card but yesterday I went with this baby.
The Decemberists “The King Is Dead”
I’ve always enjoyed the Decemberists but this is the first time I have legitimately loved one of their albums. It has more of an americana/country-ish vibe, with each song being more accessible than many of their previous albums. I...

i have songs too
Last night I played for Axis McHenry (our local 20’s ministry) and I realized something: I do not play my own songs enough. At the beginning of the night, I played some of my original tunes and did not feel comfortable at all. I was not very familiar with the chord structures or lyrics for most of them and in one case I could not even remember the song melody at all!
However, when it came...

Today I got a haircut. Sometimes I dread this, not because I have some fear of getting a bad haircut but it’s the amount of awkward interactions that have taken place in hair salons. Stylists make small talk and they always begin it with one question, “where do you work?”
So, today I sit down and prepare for the question.
“You off work today?”
“Yes,”...
